Monday night is movie night at my sister's and amongst the choices were 'Fashion', 'Rang De Basanti', 'Black'. Deciding we were in the mood for a comedy instead, we put on 'Golmaal Returns'. Now, I like slapstick humor. I remember watching 'Airplane', 'Naked Gun' and 'Top Secret' and laughing my ass off. However, more groans than guffaws were heard last night.
So, this is a film that suspends reason and wit for juvenile humour. It has plenty of gags stitched one after the other in a threadbare script, but many of these gags are utterly crude and about a far away from being politically correct as you can imagine. It's asinine for the most part, with humor that includes (but is not limited to) terrible gay jokes, plenty of guys being hit in the crotch, and an incredibly absurd portrayal of speech disorders.
Yet it still manages to entertain enough to keep it from being shut off. Some of the best moments come when they're ripping off something – there's a hilarious sequence where Ajay spouts dialogue mentioning every one of his films and my favorite part -the story of what happened on the yacht that included the most absurd dance sequence (which reminded me exactly of the type of film that they spoofed on 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi').
As far as the acting goes, no one will win any awards for this one, but it is the actors who make the film bearable. Ajay Devgan and Arshad Warsi are passable, Kareena Kapoor serves mostly as commercial appeal, Celina Jaitley and Amrita Arora are the film's eye candy and I personally found Tusshar Kapoor nice to look at but would have preferred a completely mute performance to the rubbish that left his mouth. It was Shreyas Talpade who stole the show for me. Plus, of the three men, he made the best looking woman!
Even the music was forgettable for me. The only track that made any musical impression was the title track, though 'Meow' will linger in my mind - not for the music, but simply for the picturization. MEOW indeed!

I think you almost always need to be in the right type of mood to watch any kind of comedy - especially a screwball type like this one. I'm debating whether it would be worth my time to see the first one.

The Meow song picturization was inspired from Beyonce's 'Kitty Cat'

Thanks for the link. I've never seen that before. Pretty much a direct copy - except I actually like the Golmaal one better.
